To Kill a Mockingbird: Compare and Contrast

There are many differences and similarities between the book and the movie of To Kill A Mockingbird, some of which are more significant than others. However all changes made to the movie do not interrupt the main ideals of the story.

One of the most noticeable differences between the movie and the book is Aunt Alexandra. In the book, Aunt Alexandra is an important and influential character; however, in the book she is nonexistent. Some of the major effects that she creates in the book either happen by other force or do not happen at all.  Nonetheless, the move is still successful in relaying the main themes.

Another significant difference was the lack of Mrs. Dubose in the children’s life.  In the book she was a vital character in relaying the themes of courage, as she was a morphine addict and was able to wean herself off of the drug shortly before her death. Atticus once said, "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs. Dubose won all ninety-eight pounds of her. According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew."

Although there were many other differences, the movie is mostly true to the book. The movie still manages to communicate the main concepts or themes of the book: the coexistence of good and evil, the loss of innocence, courage, and moral integrity. The trail still manages to some the cruelty of a man blinded by hate.  Even without Mrs. Dubose, the movie still shows the importance of courage through Atticus.  The coexistence of good and evil is still represented throughout the movie.

All in all, To Kill A Mockingbird the book and To Kill A Mockingbird the movie are very similar. The movie still manages to show the view the viciousness of a prejudice man or woman.
